Taj Hotel in Thimpu
I checked out the place on 8 July 2008 and found it easily deserves the six star rating. Rooms are luxurious; breakfast a gourmet delight. The single room rack rate is $275 plus 10% service charge and 10% government tax... go figure; (the obligatory tour package costs include a hefty government fee... $65, I heard). I hated the hotel my Evergreen tour package included in Thiphu (Riverview Hotel) and tried to get into the Taj. The best off season discount I could haggle still brought the rate up to $180++ with no refund offered for the unused package hotel! I declined and was moved to the quite decent Pedling Hotel in the center of the city. Still, if you can afford it, the Taj Hotel will guarantee a very pleasant experience in the kingdom. A second wing is currently under construction and will feature two small movie theaters. The complex is located right in the middle of the city... very convenient. Fred Bellomy 7/8/08
