Hello
I have been wanting to go to Bhutan and doing a little trek. I am a good runner but I never trek before unless you count a 3 hour hiking in rainforest in Indonesia.
My questions are pretty basic but please answer them as I am very new to trekking:
1. I heard there%26#39;ll be a toilet tent. Is it like this one voreshule.dk/toilet/pics/2000_10_nepal_3.jpg ? So after doing our body function, we need to bring shovel to cover our waste? How about the toilet paper? Do we throw it inside the hole and cover it?
2. Can I take a bath during the trek? I mean a normal bath, with water and soap? How do we clean ourselves during trekking?
3. Is there any ways to keep the creepy crawlies and snakes out of my sleeping bag at night? I heard we can buy something like snake away at outdoor store?
4. How about drinking water? I heard water is not covered in our $250 a day rate. So how much water I should bring in trekking?
5. Any essentials things (other than cloth related) I should bring?
6. Although I am a decent runner I always run at near sea level altitude. Is there any training I should do?
Thanks and please pardon my ';basic'; questions. I am really clueless !
1st Time Trekking 1st time Bhutan - advice?
Hello,
Do you have any idea which trek you%26#39;re going to do? The treks are from 3-24 days long. All are above sea level, most from 2200 meters and up.
I think it is wise do do slow activities in the beginning, when your body can adjust itself to the altitude, after 24-48 hours it should be o.k.
The toilet tent is a hole, you%26#39;ll get toilet paper and the staff covers it before leaving camp.
No shower tent provided, you can take a quick drying towel and wash like the locals in the streams, usually camps are next to a stream. It is cold water though, straight from the high mountains.
You can try to ask for a hot-stone bath, a very good experience in Bhutan, where stones are heated over a fire and put in the tub filled with stream water, so heating it up. Not so much available, but worth asking for.
In Bhutan not so may creepies, never heard about snakes. Ask your touroperator about details.
To save on plastic you can take some empty bottles or bags like the cyclists have, to fill with boiled water during the trek. Buying bottled water is very cheap, but on treks there is nowhere to buy.
The day rate is still 200$ for 3 or more in a group/ You can ask the operator to arrange for bottled water in the car while driving, and save the stopping for shops, this should add very litle to your account.
You can take some small souvenirs from your country as presents.Take lots of films, batteries and other picture accesories.
An umbrella for rain during the drive, and good rainclothes during the trek.Plastic bags for inside your bags and backpack during the trek. Wet-wipes.Walking poles. Clothing for layers.
I hope I%26#39;ve covered most of your questions. Feel free to ask more. Enjoy.
