The travel agency Wind Horse Tours uses inferior guides for our trip to Bhutan in October 2008. Our guide was lazy and had no manners. His information about the country was uninteresting.
Moreover the company was not honest about the accomodations it placed us in. It claimed that in Bhutan the more upscale accomodations were unavailable, even at additional costs. This proved not to be true. We were repeatly mislead about the hotels and inns that we stayed in. They were mostly bottom of the barrel within the categories that had been selected for us. We were told that other hotels and inns were not available. This was not true.
Even worse the travel agency planned a trip for us that had us in a car for a much longer time than was necessary- we were exhausted from the trip. At the beginning of the trip we were in a car for ten hours for a journey that should have been split into two days.
After we bought the trip from Wind Horse Tours we had a difficult time contacting the agency to reconfirm the trip. The phones of the company had been shut off in their US office in Minnepolis, Minnesota. After emails we were finally contacted and told that a mistake had been made. It was not reassuring to think that the company was out of business after we had paid in advance for the whole trip.
Overall we think that Wind Horse Tours promises a great deal and delivers inferior service.

Sorry to hear you had an unpleasant experience. Hopefully Bhutan still gave you some great feelings. As stated many times before, I advise to arrange the tour to and in Bhutan with a local agent. Anyhow, the foreign agent has to use a local one and you%26#39;re paying more than necessary. Also you have less grip on changes and arrangements.
The hotels in Bhutan are clean but mostly simple and should%26#39;t be compared with other western standards. They all are gouvernment-approved. You can get more luxury for additional payment.
Did you try to change the guide you were not happy with? I saw a report here on TA where people also had problems with the guide and got a change, which improved their trip.
Hope you%26#39;ll have the chance to return to Bhutan for a better experience.

Trip to Bhutan is totally different from the trips elsewhere in the world.Trip is all about experiencing the living culture and tradition, values attached to it,experiencing religion, the people, and prestine enviroment. All the tour guides are trained and certified by the government tourists office, tour guides used have more than five years experience. This year we handled more than 400 guests visiting bhutan, but we never had a single group that asked to change their tour guide. All the feed backs that we received from the guests are posted on the website. All the hotels used are regulated and standardized by the governemnt for international tourists.Road widening is being carried out from border town to the capital city and guests where well informed about the traffic disruption, if the guests choose not to stay in border town and drive straight to the capital,it is a long journey. Windhorse is not a sole ownership business and we have office all over in Asia.We assure that if you travel to this part of the world, quality services, memorable experiences, magical destinations will not be missed.
