Fear of Flying

Hello,

Can anyone allay my fear of taking off and and landing into Paro? I hear it is ';exciting';--a word I don%26#39;t often associate with comfortable flights.

Did you take off and land into Kai Tak? Not much different than that.

I was very excited about the take off and landing, as I%26#39;m quite a plane buff, and it was a bit of a non-issue.

The only disconcerting thing was the perceived distance away from the landscape on approach, but I think it was just that - perception. The take off was like any other take off I%26#39;ve done.

On landing you seem to corkscrew around a bit, lots of turns, etc. and then a last little jog over at the end. But - if you%26#39;re sitting in an aisle seat and not paying attention, you probably wouldn%26#39;t even notice.

I did take a whole video out my window of the landing, it may be too big to upload to T.A. but I%26#39;ll try and do it tonight if you%26#39;re interested.

Thank you so much for responding, ozcanuck. I actually moved to HK (thankfully) after they moved the airport...though I%26#39;ve heard much about what it was like to land there while looking right into people%26#39;s apartments.

I appreciate your thoughts on this and feel much better that I may be making more of it than necessary.

As only the very best pilots are allowed landing in Paro, which is visual only, not with instruments, you%26#39;re in good hands.

My first landing I had the big priviledge to be invited in the cockpit, and was sitting behind and in between the two pilots, one a new Zealander who was coaching the young Bhutanese pilot. It was the most fantastic landing I%26#39;ve ever seen, and made a lot of pictures.It was like landing in a fairy-tale, not frightening at all, just beautiful.

They warn you before that you%26#39;ll see houses very close by and that this is normal, and not any emergency.I found you a film of the landing, to get a taste of it:

I hate to fly, but it wasn%26#39;t bad at all. Not nearly as scary as I had anticipated.
